Where do consultations take place?
What will happen at my first session?
How long will my course of counselling or psychotherapy last?
This is a collaborative process and therefore we will explore how effective and helpful the process is by having regular reviews. Some people choose to take part in counselling because of a specific problem, such as bereavement. This kind of therapy often takes place over a relatively short period of time. Others prefer to carry out a deeper exploration of their beliefs and behaviours, to get to the root of multiple issues, and of course this takes longer. I am happy to keep seeing any client for as long as you feel the work is effective and leading you in a helpful direction.
However, our ultimate goal needs to focus upon the client gaining the necessary tools to maintain a healthy emotional life.
What is the philosophy that underpins your counselling services?
I believe that:
- Human beings have a fundamental need to belong to some form of community – we are interdependent and all impact upon each other.
- Our first attachment experiences as children can have a profound effect on our self-identity, relationships and view of the world as we grow up.
- Every single person has a right to be treated with respect, dignity and compassion, and valued for who they are.
- We all make mistakes, but these are vital for us to learn, change and grow.
- Simply showing kindness and gratitude can help to heal a wounded spirit and heart.
- We are all responsible for our own choices and decisions, and it is possible to update and re-evaluate our early life experiences to develop a more coherent sense of self.
